Title: Daughter of Mythos
Author: Melissa Drake
Series: Mythos (Book #1)
Genre: Fantasy
Length: 211 pages
Published: 2013
Publisher: Createspace
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Fifteen-year-old Nora Salvatore thinks wizards, fairies, dragons, and demons are the stuff of myth, but she is wrong. Nora is thrown head first into a life of magic and chaos after learning of a mysterious legend surrounding her birth and the magical powers she is supposed to possess. When an army of demons from a parallel world plans the eradication of mankind, only she can close the portals and keep the demons at bay. Can she learn to harness her new-found powers in time to stop them?

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

This was a nice, light fantasy tale. While there is an overall threat that must be vanquished, the story is also about a girl learning about her true heritage and growing up a little. There's a nice lesson about how there is no strict evil or good to people - that everyone lives in a grey area and tend to lean one way or another. For a first novel, this was pretty good, and I look forward to future novels from this author.

This was incredible. A mysterious virus is brought aboard the Titanic, and then released by an agent sent to retrieve the vial. This mysterious virus turns people into flesh-eating zombies. While the captain is below-decks trying to contain the virus and those afflicted, the owner of the liner orders that the ship go full steam ahead for New York. Ten Days by Olivia Mayfield

Add to Goodreads
Title: Ten Days
Author: Olivia Mayfield
Genre: Science Fiction, New Adult
Length: 187 pages
Published: 2013
Publisher: Independent
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Nineteen-year-old Cally isn’t like the others. In her society, the Machine caters to every whim, ensuring people don’t have to leave their pods. But Cally and her best friend Marshal find themselves drawn to how things used to be, when people lived on the surface of the earth and relied upon manpower, not technology. When physical contact wasn’t uncivilized, and love was normal, acceptable, embraced. Cally tries to swallow down her increasing dissatisfaction with the “rules,” as well as her rapidly developing feelings for Marshal, a task getting harder each day.

Then, things start going downhill, fast. Food is spoiled. Air grows musty. The population panics about the dysfunction–is it sabotage? Anarchy? But Cally and Marshal discover the truth: The Machine, the answer to all their problems for longer than anyone can remember, is breaking down. Now, these two have to risk it all to save themselves and the people they care about…before their entire world destroys itself.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

Ten Days is based off the short story "The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster. Instead of following Kuno, the story instead follows Cally, a young woman who embarks on a journey with her friend, Marshal, to understand why they are different. We do get to meet Kuno, which is a nice touch, and the author did not change his fate. This was a delightful story, and included hints of romance as both Cally and Marshal learn how to interact as the ancients did.

I can no longer find the link on Amazon for this e-book, so I can only assume it's no longer available for purchase. Hopefully it'll be re-released some day, so others can enjoy it.

The Alienist by Caleb Carr

Add to Goodreads
Title: The Alienist
Author: Caleb Carr
Series: Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Book #1)
Genre: Thriller / Mystery / Historical Fiction
Length: 599 pages
Published: 1994
Publisher: Bantam Books
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) The year is 1896, the place, New York City. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friend and former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan's infamous brothels.

The newly appointed police commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt, in a highly unorthodox move, enlists the two men in the murder investigation, counting on the reserved Kreizler's intellect and Moore's knowledge of New York's vast criminal underworld. They are joined by Sara Howard, a brave and determined woman who works as a secretary in the police department. Laboring in secret (for alienists, and the emerging discipline of psychology, are viewed by the public with skepticism at best), the unlikely team embarks on what is a revolutionary effort in criminology-- amassing a psychological profile of the man they're looking for based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who has killed before--and will kill again before the hunt is over.

Fast-paced and gripping, infused with a historian's exactitude, The Alienist conjures up the Gilded Age and its untarnished underside: verminous tenements and opulent mansions, corrupt cops and flamboyant gangsters, shining opera houses and seamy gin mills. Here is a New York during an age when questioning society's belief that all killers are born, not made, could have unexpected and mortal consequences.

My Review:
I give this book a 4 out of 5.

So the plot was excellent. I enjoyed the search for the killer, the use of "new" technology to examine the bodies and the crime scenes, and the use of what we now would call profiling. There were some great little subplots by including political intrigue, sinister crime bosses, and even romance.

My main issue with the book was that it was slow to develop the story. Things didn't really pick up for awhile and it was hard to get into the book. There were a lot of philosophical type debates that went on and sometimes those would make my eyes glaze over, so I'd find myself having to put the book away for a day or so. Otherwise this was a pretty good read.

Make It Right by Megan Erickson

Title: Make It Right
Author: Megan Erickson
Series: Bowler University (Book #2)
Genre: New Adult, Romance
Length: 384 pages
Published: September 9th 2014
Publisher: William Morrow Impulse
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Max Payton lives by two rules:Size and strength win any fight, and never show weakness.

When a rash of assaults sends Bowler University for a tail spin, Max volunteers to help teach a self-defense class. One of the other instructors is the beautiful pixie-faced girl he keeps butting heads with…and who challenges everything he thought he knew.

Lea Travers avoids guys like Max - cocky jocks who assume she's fragile because of a disability caused by a childhood accident. She likes to be in control, and something about being with Max makes her feel anything but. But during the moments he lets his guard down, Lea sees a soul as broken inside as she is outside. Trusting him is a whole other problem...

When the assaults ramp up and hit close to home, Lea and Max must learn, before it’s too late, that true strength can come from vulnerability…and giving in to trust is sometimes the only way to make things right.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

Max Payton was the "villain" in the first book of this trilogy, Make It Count. So getting to see things from his point of view and learning about why he was such a jerk to Kat and Alec. I loved that the majority of the book was through his eyes, though I did enjoy reading through Lea's eyes. The book itself was light in tone, but the romance was great and the sexual tension was heavy early on. Probably the only negative thing that I could say about it was that as soon as the author introduced the attacks on campus, I knew that either Lea or Max was going to get attacked. But the fact that you couldn't tell until right before it happened WHO was going to get attacked made up for it. Definitely a great book for fans of the emerging New Adult genre.

Title: The Machine Stops
Author: E.M. Forster
Genre: Science Fiction, Novella
Length: 48 pages
Published: 2008 (original: 1909)
Publisher: Dodo Press
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) "The Machine Stops" is a science fiction short story (12,300 words) by E. M. Forster. After initial publication in The Oxford and Cambridge Review (November 1909), the story was republished in Forster's 'The Eternal Moment and Other Stories' in 1928.

After being voted one of the best novellas up to 1965, it was included that same year in the populist anthology 'Modern Short Stories'. In 1973 it was also included in 'The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two'.

The book is particularly notable for predicting new technologies such as instant messaging and the internet.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

I truly think this story will haunt me for awhile. Forster has created a world where humans live beneath the earth, never touch, and never truly live - at least not live in the way that we do. And then one day, the machine which keeps them alive begins to fail. It is the end of civilization as these futuristic people have known.

Author: James Lowder
Genre: Non Fiction Essays
Length: 220 pages
Published: 2012
Publisher: BenBella Books, Inc.
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Go beyond the Wall and across the narrow sea with this collection about George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, from A Game of Thrones to A Dance with Dragons.

The epic game of thrones chronicled in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series has captured the imaginations of millions of readers. In Beyond the Wall, bestselling authors and acclaimed critics offer up thought-provoking essays and compelling insights:

Daniel Abraham reveals the unique challenges of adapting the original books into graphic novels. Westeros.org founders Linda Antonsson and Elio M. García, Jr., explore the series’ complex heroes and villains, and their roots in the Romantic movement. Wild Cards contributor Caroline Spector delves into the books’ controversial depictions of power and gender.

Plus much more, from military science fiction writer Myke Cole on the way Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder shapes many of the leading characters to author and television writer Ned Vizzini on the biases against genre fiction that color critical reactions to the series.

My Review:
I give this book a 4 out of 5.

Most of these essays were pretty interesting. They explore the world of Westeros through varying topics: feminism, PTSD, redemption, and psychology, among many others. There were a few that I found boring which led me to lower my rating for this book. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the essays that really delved into the world and characters of Westeros. Definitely a must-read for fans of the series.

The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

Title: The Paper Magician
Author: Charlie N. Holmberg
Series: The Paper Magician Trilogy (Book #1)
Genre: Fantasy
Length: 224 pages
Published: 2014
Publisher: 47North
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

From the imaginative mind of debut author Charlie N. Holmberg, The Paper Magician is an extraordinary adventure both dark and whimsical that will delight readers of all ages.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

Ceony Twill wants to be a Magician. Mostly she wants to be a Smelter: a magician bound to metal magic and able to enchant bullets and other metal items. She's disappointed when she finds out that she has to be assigned to a Paper Magician for her apprenticeship, as all the other slots have been filled and there are not enough Paper Magicians. She takes an immediate, though unfounded, dislike of the magician she is apprenticed to, Emery Thane.

After a practitioner of flesh magic, an Excisioner, takes her instructor's heart, and his fellow magicians leave him for dead, Ceony takes it upon herself to rescue him.

This story was phenomenal. I had inklings of a few things (I'm being vague because I don't want to ruin it for you), but was not expecting the attack on Ceony and Thane. I enjoyed everything about this story, and can not wait for the next book in the trilogy, which is due out in November.

Unfettered by Shawn Speakman

Add to Goodreads
Title: Unfettered
Author: Shawn Speakman
Genre: Short Stories, Fantasy
Length: 574 pages
Published: 2013
Publisher: Grim Oak Press
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) You define life or it defines you.

In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both.

Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hogdkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story Shawn could sell toward alleviating those bills—and suggested Shawn ask the same of his other friends.

Unfettered is the result, an anthology built to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

With the help of stalwart friends and these wonderful short stories, Shawn has taken the gravest of life hardships and created something magical. Unfettered is not only a fantastic anthology in its own right but it’s a testament to the generosity found in the science fiction and fantasy community—proof that humanity can give beyond itself when the need arises.

After all, isn’t that the driving narrative in fantasy literature?

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

This anthology includes stories from many of fantasy's great authors, many of which are part of the worlds they've built for years: Terry Brooks, Lev Grossman, Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson, Naomi Novik, Jacqueline Carey...The list goes on. Some stories are canon for their worlds, and some are not related to the worlds they've created at all.

All of the stories are excellent - some are super short and others are long. Lovers of fantasy and fans of any of these authors will love this anthology.

Genre: Horror
Length: 85 pages

Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Volume 10 of The Dead Years begins with the group divided. Those who realize the importance of the trip out into the world of Feeders and those just looking to survive.

Once the decision to go after the man capable of saving the world is made, all that's left is convincing those left behind to let them go.

"I have loved reading this book from the very first chapter, waiting impatiently for the next issue. It is action packed and kept me on pins and needles."
With an unknown threat waiting to rear its ugly head, the residents of Blackmore stroll unknowingly into the most devastating ambush ever.

If the events taking place at Blackmore weren't enough, the long road to bring back Eugene Lockwood proves to be just as traumatic.

"Jeff Olah has done the zombie genre well. He should be writing for the Walking Dead series. It could use his story line which I think is much better."
Help has never been so close... or so far away!

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

This was definitely a decent follow up. The story itself is left in a way where there is closure, but could potentially spawn more volumes. I don't know whether the author plans on continuing the story, but I would love to read more about Mason, Samantha, Randy, and the others. There's huge potential for fleshing out the final chapters of the book and giving details on what occurs after.

Plagued: The Ironville Zombie Quarantine Retraction Experiment

Title: Plagued: The Ironville Zombie Quarantine Retraction Experiment
Author: Better Hero Army
Series: Plagued States of America (Book #3)
Genre: Horror
Length: 300 pages
Published: 2014
Publisher: Better Hero Army
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) When a helicopter carrying presidential hopeful Senator William Jefferson crashes in the Quarantine Zone, zombie half-breed Penelope Hope is enlisted into the most unorthodox rescue team ever assembled for a mission to save the very man leading the effort to wipe out her kind from the Plagued States of America...

With the recent destruction of Biter's Hill and Biter's Island, the last remaining sanctuary for uninfected humans inside the quarantine zone stands alone against the seemingly endless zombie horde. Tom and Penelope, survivors of the destruction at Biter's Hill, have taken up residence inside the Elevated Platform Station at Biter's Bend in the hopes of rehabilitating Penelope from her half-breed zombie past. Their plans of a normal life are put on hold, however, when Army Ranger Mason Jones arrives seeking asylum from the very man rallying against him, Tom's own father. When Tom's father's helicopter crashes deep inside the quarantine zone, Tom and Penelope enlist Mason Jones and other survivors of Biter's Island on a mission to rescue him.

In this action-packed installment of the critically acclaimed Plagued States of America series, zombie half-breed Penelope Hope returns to join forces with Army Ranger Mason Jones for another edge-of-your-seat thrill ride.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

I received a free ARC copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This time the story is seen mostly through Penelope's eyes. If you remember, Penelope is the half-breed that Tom Jefferson came across in the first book. The beginning of the story is marked by Tom's father's helicopter (en route to Midamerica) crashing. With him is Dr. Kennedy, a couple of "handlers" (bodyguards), and a reporter, who does not survive the crash. Due to the storm, no one can fly anything to rescue the Senator and his team. Tom knows his father went out there to find his sister. So he gathers a team, consisting of Penelope, Hank, Mason Jones, and Dr. O'Farrell, and heads out on a train driven by the Zombie Pin-Up King, Houston.

A lot of the story is getting to Midamerica, and the rescue of his father and the others. While at the airstrip, Tom and the others learn that there are way more half-breeds than there should be, and that his father and Dr. Kennedy were involved in something far more dangerous than they guessed.

The story was action-packed and ended in a way that could lead to a fourth novel, while still definitely allowing closure on the story as a whole. I would not be sad to see another novel in this series, as I grew to love the characters, especially Penelope.

Author: Better Hero Army
Series: Plagued States of America (Book #2)
Genre: Horror

Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) When Army Ranger Lieutenant Mason Jones arrives at the Rock Island Prison Defense Facility for his tour of duty, suspicion that he is from the Inspector General's Office leaves him isolated from his fellow soldiers in a place more hostile than any war zone he has ever seen. To survive, he must turn to the manager of the facility's secret scientific zombie research lab, the only person on the island with the power to get him out alive.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The second Plagued novel introduces us to Rock Island - a zombie trading center much like Biter's Hill. However, this one also boasts much more elaborate laboratories, and even more defenses. It occurs not long after the first book, and in it we follow a new character: Mason, an Army Ranger that has been assigned to Rock Island after being removed from a mental health facility by a senator. Mason has been sent to Rock Island to meet with Dr. Kennedy in secret. He does not know why. When he finds out, it's far too late.

While at Rock Island, Mason comes across a character from the first book: Hank, who is now driving Peske's duck and has taken over his business. Hank is suspicious of Dr. Kennedy, yet still gives Mason the information he needs to contact her. Paired up with a rather disgruntled and lazy soldier to clean the cages after his previous partner is bitten and commits suicide, the unthinkable happens, and Mason's situation becomes dire.

Mason is tough as nails, but he's also got something broken inside him. This makes him a character worth caring about. I loved this book, and definitely recommend it to everyone who loves zombies.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

Add to Goodreads
Title: NOS4A2
Author: Joe Hill
Genre: Horror
Length: 692 pages
Published: 2013
Publisher: William Morrow
Brief Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads) Victoria McQueen has a secret gift for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. On her Raleigh Tuff Burner bike, she makes her way to a rickety covered bridge that, within moments, takes her wherever she needs to go, whether it’s across Massachusetts or across the country.

Charles Talent Manx has a way with children. He likes to take them for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the NOS4A2 vanity plate. With his old car, he can slip right out of the everyday world, and onto the hidden roads that transport them to an astonishing – and terrifying – playground of amusements he calls “Christmasland.”

Then, one day, Vic goes looking for trouble—and finds Manx. That was a lifetime ago. Now Vic, the only kid to ever escape Manx’s unmitigated evil, is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx never stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. He’s on the road again and he’s picked up a new passenger: Vic’s own son.

My Review:
I give this book a 5 out of 5.

This is one of those books that just sticks with you. I finished it last weekend and am just now getting around to writing the review, and it's still fresh in my mind as though I just read the last sentence minutes ago.

Charlie Manx is a terrifying villain. He takes children to Christmasland - a place in his mind where the children are trapped and he is able to feed off of their life forces to extend his own life. When Vic McQueen goes looking for trouble in her teens (after years of not using her own inscape), she ends up getting him arrested.

About half of the book deals with Vic's childhood and how she gets Manx arrested. The other half of the book deals with Vic's adulthood and the downward spiral her life takes. When Manx's body disappears from the morgue, she's just beginning to get her life back on track. And then her son disappears. What follows is her harrowing journey to escape the FBI agents, who think she's responsible for her son's disappearance, and to find her son.

What I loved best was the way the author would end a chapter part way through a sentence. The end of the sentence was the name of the next chapter. This really upped the tension and I couldn't flip the page fast enough to find out what was going on. Horror lovers will love this book.
